Friday is Mega Swag Bucks Day!

Search & Win

Fridays are Mega Swag Bucks Day (MSBD) over at Swagbucks! This means it is the perfect time to join (if you haven't already) OR get your search on as the odds are even better for winning BIG Swag Bucks denominations!

What is it?

Swagbucks is a search engine a lot like that of Google or Yahoo. You can easily download the Swagbucks Toolbar for customized web search or you can do your searching through Swagbucks.com

To put it simply, the more you search & shop the more you can earn. For example use Swagbucks to search for the sites you have bookmarked (instead of using bookmarks), or for sites you always visit regularly like email, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. Best yet, it's completely 100% FREE to join & use!

***Just for joining you get 30 Swag Bucks to start!***

By searching with Swagbucks you can earn points (aka various amounts of Swagbucks) to redeem for prizes including gift cards, music, sweepstakes, products, etc. Most recently, I redeemed some Swagbucks for a $10 Starbucks Gift Card. Personally, the gift cards I have to say are my favorite prizes at the Swag Store.

Christmas Shopping Exposed

Earlier I mentioned that I started my Christmas shopping online today. I gave it some thought and decided I would share with you the first present I purchased for Brian. I don't think Brian has ever took a peak at my blog so I hope it's safe to show you! If not, it's his own fault for snooping and ruining the surprise...right?! Anywho, this is what I bought for him today from CSNstores.com:
The X Rocker Black Video Rocker! I grabbed an amazing deal that I could not pass up. This Rocker is normally $89.99 but I got it for $39.99... 56% off!!! I hope he likes it! I know he points them out all the time when he spots them in a store but never actually says he wants one...so we will just have to wait and see!

But CSNstores.com is great, I will definitely be purchasing more from CSNstores.com in the future. They really do have something for everyone, from a suitcase to a glass aquarium table...they have it all. I will definitely keep you all informed of my upcoming experiences with CSNstores.com. If you haven't checked out their 200+ stores yet...what are you waiting for?

$50 Gift Certificate to Glencara Giveaway ends 11/15

Two of a Kind, Working on a Full House is hosting a great giveaway for a $50 Gift Certificate to Glencara. Glencara specializes in Claddagh & Celtic Rings and Jewelry since 1978, like this one:The giveaway ends on 11/15 11:59pm EST. Don't miss out...click HERE to enter!

The Christmas Shopping Has Begun!

Settling into the new place has not been as easy and quick as I was hoping. But the place is becoming to feel more like home slowly but surely. Finally one month after moving in I was able to figure out how the hook the wireless up once and for all. My office is now all put together, I would still like to get a little area rug and sitting/reading chair to make it just that much more cozy. But it's finally organized and functional.

Brian and I will be hosting Thanksgiving for both of our families this year here at our new place. We are looking forward to it and beginning to piece our menu together so hopefully it will go smoothly...we've never had to cook for so many people before! I am sure it will be interesting to say the least.

This morning I actually placed my first Christmas shopping order! One store I placed an order at online was American Eagle Outfitters (www.ae.com), one of my favorite stores. I was able to get a few things for one of my sisters as well as some stocking stuffers for Brian! All on a really good clearance sale with FREE SHIPPING! Now through 11/14 they are offering free shipping on all orders. You do not need a promo code which is nice so if you have a coupon code you can score even a sweeter deal!!!

Now that my life is slowly gaining some order I will be in a better place to post more regularly. I have been enjoying my vacation this week just relaxing and tying up some loose ends. But I've missed blogging and feel I have been neglecting soo many great finds...so you will be seeing more of me here!

I am out of the dungeon...but now I need furniture!

So, I finally moved out of the dungeon! I am now in a very large 2.5 bedroom apartment! (Hence my lack of blogging...sorry!) Although, they isn't a happy, exciting reason for my relocation... but it is nice to be in a real place of our own again!

Because it is soooo much bigger than the last place we have been on the hunt for more (and bigger) furniture. I have an entire spare bedroom with NO furniture in it. Yep...it is still naked.

Brian and I began our hunt at some yard sales and newspaper ads but have struck out thus far. It's coming to look like we may have to buy some things brand new. For example, the dining table I have right now is a lot like the pub sets or bistro sets as seen at CSNstores.com. I LOVE this table BUT I have a real dining room now and need something bigger if I ever plan on hosting a dinner party, which I do plan on doing on Friday! EEK! Looks like some of us will be standing to eat!

Business Cards for Blogs?

I have been considering creating business cards to promote Living on Ashley's Allowance. But because I do not sell anything or offer a *real* service per say, I am unsure if it would be beneficial in any way to get my blog out there even more to those who may have an interest in my content.

What do you think? Do you use business cards to promote your blog? Besides utilizing the internet, do you promote your blog in any other ways?

Any and all suggestions are much appreciated!

Oh How I Long For a Real Dining Room!

As you may recall, the last time I mentioned my daydreams for a much bigger place (compared to that of my dungeon of a basement apartment), I rattled on about my desire for a spectacular bathroom. Well, it's time for me to move on to the dining room...

Even while growing up in my family home, I never had a *real* dining room. Maybe once, I had a dining room while renting houses during college. But clearly that was short lived. I would love if my next humble abode contains one of these bad birds. I would love to have a place to host a nice party or have dinner with the fam'.

Some ideas for great furniture for my hopefully-someday-dining-room daydreaming (as seen at csnstores.com) include pieces like this one:

Oh, how I love it! Someday Ash, someday! (hopefully)!!!

Disclosure: I received no monetary compensation for writing this post. Please stay tuned for a future product review with the help of csnstores.com

Csnstores.com Review: Zwilling JA Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13 Piece Block Cutlery Set

As I mentioned before, I received a product to review from csnstores.com. Selecting a product to review was a difficult task for me as there is sooo much to chose from! The product I finally chose was the Zwilling JA Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13 Piece Block Cutlery Set.This 13 piece set includes:
  • 2 3/4" Paring Knife
  • 6" Utility Knife
  • 5 1/2" Boning Knife
  • 8" Bread Knife
  • 8" Chef's Knife
  • Steak Knives (6 pcs)
  • 9" Sharpening Steel
  • Harwood Block (to safely store knives)
The Knives are made with contour santoprene with brushed stainless steal accent handles and have satin finish stainless steel blades. Blades are precision stamped as well. These knives are dishwasher safe (but not recommended).

I am very happy with my selection! We were in rather desperate need for new knives..ours were getting pretty ancient! For dinner last night we had steak on the grill, the perfect meat to test these bad boys on! They worked beautifully. I also made a salad to go with dinner and was able to cut my tomatoes without a huge sloppy juicy mess (like I experienced with my "old" knives).

I can now happily remove my old knife set from my life. Thank you csnstores.com!

Disclosure: I received no monetary compensation for this post. I did recieve the product to review at no cost. Thank you to csnstores.com for providing me with this opportunity!

New England Coffee Product Review

Hello, my name is Ashley and I am an addict. A coffee addict that is! Really, I just HAVE to have coffee every morning. Yep, I am one of those people.

So, when I was given the opportunity to try New England Coffee I was estatic! Actually, as I am writing this my cup (#3) of New England Breakfast Blend is well within arms reach!

The flavors/blends I was so eager to try included:

Blueberry Cobbler
A fresh, sweet, juicy berry flavor with warm spice notes, reminiscent of a country kitchen.

French Vanilla
Smooth, luscious vanilla in a special blend of medium-roasted South and Central American beans.

San Fransisco Blend *Roasted Darker for Bold Flavor*
Rich, aromatic French Roast with the distinct flavors of medium-roasted Kenya AA and Sumatra Mandheling.

Hazlenut Creme (Decaffeinated)
Rich, nutty overtones in a mellow blend of medium-roasted South and Central American decaffeinated beans.

New England Breakfast Blend
The finest beans from Cental and South America in a hearty, medium-roasted wake-me-up blend.

Breakfast Blend (Decaffeinated)
A hearty, medium-roasted blend using only the finest beans from Central and South America. So flavorful you won't believe that it's decaffeinated!

The blends/flavors I was given the opportunity to try are not the only ones available! Be sure to check out all of the others including Chocolate Cappucino, Cinnamon Hazelnut, Hawaiian Macademia Nut, 4 Seasons Blend, and Costa Rican (just to name a few) at New England Coffee!

My Thoughts:

The first blend/flavor I tried was the Blueberry Cobbler. This flavor is my favorite. I love the smell of it while brewing. The blueberry flavor is perfect, it isn't too strong, and carrys out throughout the cup of coffee. I love it!

On the Blueberry Cobbler package was a sticker to "Try Me Iced" so I went to the website indicated www.trymeiced.com for brewing instructions. Boy was I glad I did! I just love iced coffee in this hot summer heat! I never really thought to brew my own iced coffee. Now that I now how I will definitely be doing it more often!

Brian's favorite was the San Fransico Blend, he usually like the more bold coffees.

Would I recommend New England Coffee?
YES, I would! I will definitely be making this a staple on my grocery list! You should definitely give it a try! There are great special offers on New England Coffee's website that you don't want to miss including a coupon, a FREE tumbler, and shop online!

Don't miss a beat... follow New England Coffee on Facebook!

Disclosure: I did not recieve any monetary compensation for this post. A special thanks to New England Coffee for providing me with the coffees mentioned above! All opinions are my own.

I Miss Having a Nice Big Bathroom!

I am definitely a daydreamer! I am always catching myself looking at home decor and what not for the space that I don't have. (Remember, I currently live in the dungeon...basement apartment). But seriously, I am always picturing my perfect home and all the things I'd love to fill it with!

Someday! In the meantime I can only dream and CSN stores is the perfect starting place to do so! For instance, I really miss having a nice big bathroom with a pretty vanity (like I use to have in my old apartment)! There are many closets MUCH bigger than my current bathroom.

Just Vanities is only one of CSN's many (200+) stores! Not only does Just Vanities have bathroom vanities but they also have bedroom vanities and vanity stools, lighting, mirrors, and much much more!

Oh, how I can not wait to get myself into a bigger place!

**Also, Stay tuned for an upcoming CSN Store product review here at Ashley's Allowance**

Disclosure: I was not monetarily compensated for writing this post. All opinions are my own.

Feature Friday: MetalRocks Etsy Shop (+giveaway)!!

Regardless of my ridiculous debt I told you about (a few posts back), I still have a difficult time staying away from shopping, especially jewelry shopping! I have bunches of jewelry and firmly believe a girl can not have enough jewelry (even though my boyfriend is sure I have more than enough)!

While it is imperative that I stick to my budget plan...a girl can dream can't she?! So, window-shopping I go!!!

If you love metal jewelry (sterling silver, argentium silver, 14K gold fill and 10K solid gold), I am sure you will just drool over what you will find at MetalRocks Etsy Shop!

About the Artist:
Behind the scenes at MetalRocks is artist Sharon. Sharon has been making jewelery for most of her life. In 1987 she took her passion further, attending metal smithing courses at the Southwestern Cultural Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. At the time, she was studying the art of Astrology. She began to independently study the stones representation via the Astrological signs and their various healing properties. She has been a professional astrologer since 1989 and love to marry this knowledge as well as the healing properties, within many of my pieces. Sharon opened her Etsy shop in July of 2008 after overcoming a terrible car accident in 1994 (you can read more about this here). She is grateful for the time she could not solder as it gave her a greater appreciation of wire and the creativity that can be achieved via this medium. She likes to think her years of loving jewelery, training and fighting/finding her way back to her creative outlet are in every piece she makes.

An interesting tid-bit about Sharon is that she is quite the loyal football fan for the Saskatchewan Roughriders! She shared with me a story about how one day a fellow football fan twitter friend checked out her Etsy Shop and asked here where the football stuff was? Well, here it is...

What I Thought:

In my opinion, Sharon at MetalRocks is an extremely talented individual! Her jewlerly is most definitely "drool-worthy" in my book! She has a great selection and has fantastic pieces even I can afford (and that's hard to find)!

Actually, I do plan to purchase a peice of jewelry, I'm just not sure which one I should pick! For me, it's a toss up between these two pieces:

Diamonds of Silver Post Earrings

Tiny Silver Hammered Heart Post Earrings

Once I make my decision and order them, I'll be sure to keep you "in the know" :)

Looking for some original artwork to revamp your space?
You should consider the artwork at Emberatia's Etsy shop!

Trust me, I'm bookmarking this one for when I FINALLY escape from the dungeon (ie. my current apartment).

Her art is t
op-notch, really.

About the Artist: Ember Fairbairn-Ramsay

The Artist's Statement (directly from her website):

"Creating art for me is a communion with creation, it is a meditation where one “loses” self and merges into all that is and all that is yet to be. The artwork can also be a contemplation, rather than a mental, conceptual idea of artmaking. To a large degree it is the process and the form which shapes the content of the work, employing colour, mark making , symbol and shape through oil paint, and texture via the encaustic process. My work is also about relationship with and within nature as a being in the world of form".

"Ember has exhibited since 2000, selling work and completing commissions. Prior to which she trained in Queensland. She has sold work in Australia, U.S.A, Canada.
"

Embers favorite materials to work with are oil, encaustic, chelac, bitumen, and collages.

My Debt Dilemma

I've never really explained much about what/where this blog stems from. To be completely honest, very penny really does count in my situation.

I may have mentioned my ridiculous debt that I have acquired at the age of 24, but I'm sure I never really explained it. So I decided it's time I open up a bit.

My days with debt aa began back in 2000 when I was 18 years old. I was offered my very first credit card. While at first this was a great and positive thing for me. I was able to keep little to no balance on my card for a while as I was so afraid of the thing. My nervousness subsided and I maxed that thing out in minutes. It didn't take long, really.

I wish I had been more educated in the debt and credit card world back then.

Since, I've nearly paid my credit cards (I now have 2, both acquired in college) off at times, and without haste racked them back up. Actually I lie, I have 3. I have a store credit card as well. With a smaller limit but has since increased as I use this credit card as I should. The store card has absolutely no balance on it currently, if I use it, I pay it off immediately.

Currently, my interest rates are ridiculously high and I haven't used them in at least two years or so. One of them may even be closed to be honest with you. While my credit cards are not currently maxed out, they certainly aren't below the suggested 30% of limit (I read that somewhere?).

I checked out this nifty debt calculator that helps determine how long it will take to pay off your credit card debt. I'm sure there are millions of other ones out there, but I use this one because I find it the easiest to understand.

My credit card debt as of today is as follows:
  • Credit Card #1: $2107.69 with an APR of 28.99%
  • Credit Card #2: $2365.35 with an APR of 19.15%
  • Credit Card #3: $0 with an APR of 24.99%
For a grand total of $4473.04 in credit card debt.

Now, credit card debt is not my only debt.

Next comes my car. A used 2005 car that I do love. It was my first big purchase made on my own, all by myself independently (meaning no co-signer). I bought the car a little over 3 years ago. I still have 23 more payments to make on it. Yep I was super smart and financed for 72 months with a 9.99% APR. Bad idea Ash! I'm calling the credit union tomorrow to find out what my pay-off is as I paid a little extra some months (well maybe more like once). I'll update you with that number once I have it.

But for the point of this post, if I were to continue to pay the minimum monthly payment for the rest of the term of my loan my costs would be $6013.81.

Up next is my biggest, most scariest, with-me-for-life type debt. My student loans. I have Private Student Loans with the oh so lovely Sallie Mae & I have federal loans with Direct Loans. My Sallie Mae debt is crazy and almost unmanageable. My Direct Loans don't make me as anxious.
Mind you I financed my ENTIRE 4 year Bachelors Degree education (including cost of living expenses). Another GREAT idea I had. NOT!

My student loan debt as of today is as follows:
  • Sallie Mae: Total Amount Outstanding (5 private loans): $61,061.14 APRs between 3-5%.
  • Direct Loans (4 loans): $7,617.16 APRs (2) at 2.48% and the other (2) at 6.8%
My Sallie Mae monthly payment is approximately $486.00 & my Direct Loan monthly payment is about $83.00 or $569.00 a month!

For a grand total of $68,678.30 in student loan debt as of today.

My student loan debt is ridiculous because to be honest with you, my yearly salary (which requires my college degree) is not even half of my student loan debt. GRR!

But you live and you learn. This is my debt, I created it and I will fix it. It will be a challenge but I am determined!

So, in total, my debt is approximately $79,165.15 at 24 years of age.

Let me add that I am not currently paying $0 in rent. I did have an apartment, but when I started to pay back student loans and realized I could not afford my life I move into the in-law apartment at my parents house. Without this, I don't really know what I would do.

My Plan:

As of July 1st, I have a new (and strict) budget in place. ( I have this nifty budget application on my Mac that I adore). I have decided to first attack my Auto Loan debt. According to a lot of people this is probably the totally wrong decision. But for me I think it is best. I just (days ago) placed my Sallie Mae loans into a voluntary forbearance. BUT in my budget I do plan on paying AT LEAST the interest (in the past has been about $220.00 applied to interest). This way once they come out of forbearance my monthly payment will be about the same it use to be. I will continue to pay minimum monthly payments on my credit cards and Direct Loans. I will be paying 2x the monthly payment on my car.

I know it will be tough and things may not go exactly as planned...but I am determined to make this work. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to chime in!

Greensations & Youthful Trends Review & Giveaway

Looking for some new natural body care products?

I was recently given the opportunity to try out a couple products by Greensations and Youthful Trends including: the ThermaSkin Facial Cleanser and the Youthful Trends Caffeinated Makeup Primer.

Greensations offers 100% Natural Capsaicin Body Care Products of a wide variety. Youthful Trends is their 100% Natural Mineral Makeup line. Haircare products and skincare products are also available.

There are so many great things about these 100% Natural Caffeinated Capsaicin Body Care Products that sure helped to lure me in including:
  • No Chemicals
  • No Animal Testing
  • No Preservatives
  • Natural Botanicals
  • Proven Ingredients
  • Exlusive Formulas
What I thought:

ThermaSkin Facial Cleanser

The facial cleanser was refreshing and had a nice crisp scent. I really liked it. It was soothing to my skin and did not burn or sting in the least as I have experienced with other cleansers in the past.

Youthful Trends Caffeinated Makeup Primer

The makeup primer was nice and light, it did not weigh me down at all. It has a clean cucumber scent. Under my makeup it wasn't noticeable at all and it didn't make my makeup "caked up" at all. This one gets an A+ in my book!

These are definitely products I would use again. My positive experience with these 2 products makes me want to go ahead and order some other products as well!
